Temporary Graduate 485 - 2 More Years
485 Graduate Visas extended for some
The Australian government has announced a further 2 years extension to the Temporary Graduate 485 visa (post-study) work rights for international students who have completed select qualifications from Australian higher education providers (CRICOS registered).
From 1 July 2023 the work rights will extend the current settings as follows:
For select Bachelor degrees: 2 years to 4 years
For select Masters degrees: 3 years to 5 years
For all Doctoral degrees: 4 years to 6 years
The extended work rights will give these international students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in Australia, further develop their skills and knowledge, give employers access to a larger pool of skilled professionals and help boost Australia’s economy.
Not all students will qualify for this extension as the select qualifications target critical skills shortage areas which have been identified, at present, as those in health, engineering, agriculture and teaching. An indicative list of the eligible occupations and qualifications are outlined here with a full, completed list yet to be confirmed before 1 July 2023.
Factors contributing to those living and studying in regional and remote Australia will stay the same while also qualifying for the additional 2 years.
Graduates who have a valid Temporary Graduate Visa on 1 July 2023, or who apply for one after this date will be considered for the two year extension.
The targeted skills will be revisited every year and adapted as necessary in line with changes in the labour market.
What if I don’t qualify for the extension?
Those who do not meet the criteria to be granted a further 2 years extension on 1 July 2023, may instead be able to apply for a 408 “Pandemic” visa that is valid for 2 years with full work rights. To qualify you will need:
A Temporary 485 Visa that expires before 1 July 2023
You are not eligible to apply for the 2 year extension to the 485 visa
You have an undecided 408 “Pandemic” visa and held a 485 visa at the time of lodgement
