Occupations on the Move

The following visas generally require an occupation to be nominated from either the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skill Occupation List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL):

  • Employer Nominated Scheme (ENS) 186 visa

  • Skilled Independent 189 visa (points tested)

  • Skilled Nominated 190 visa

  • Training 407 visa

  • Temporary Skilled Shortage (TSS) 482 visa

  • Temporary Graduate 485 (graduate work) visa

  • Skilled Work Regional Provisional 491 via

  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Provisional 494 visa

The Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business is tasked with reviewing the occupations lists every 6 – 12 months, to meet the ever changing short and medium-long terms needs of the Australian economy.

In December 2019, the Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business proposed 38 occupations be either removed or transitioned from the STSOL, MLTSSL and ROL, in what is categorized as a ‘traffic light’ system:

  • Red light: complete removal from the occupation list

  • Orange light: transition from its current list to another list

  • Green: addition to a list

The recommendations are still under review and once finalised will take effect in March 2020.

Below, we recap the proposed changes for March 2020 and what they could mean if you are considering nominating an occupation in any of those occupations.

Conclusion

The changes are not yet confirmed but, our recommendations to anyone affected by an occupation moving is to lodge your visa application as soon as you become eligible.

If you have any questions about these possible changes contact us to discuss further.
