Points Test

Currently, prospective applicants need to score at least least 65 points to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) application in the Skillselect system to then be considered for a 189 visa (points stream), 190 visa, or 491 visa visa within the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program.

The points are calculated on a range of factors which depend on their age, their English language ability, their qualifications, employment history (either inside or outside Australia, or both), whether they have a partner and if so, what skills the partner is able to share with Australia, as well as the type of visa you want to apply for.

Over time, the points awarded to each of these factors may increase or decrease so, timing of EOI lodgement can be especially crucial. For example, a prospective applicant wanting to improve their English language score from 0 to 10 points (‘Proficient’) may coincide with them turning 45 years of age resulting in them becoming ineligible to apply.

With limited spaces available within the skilled migration program, competition for invitations is fierce which means there is no guarantee of receiving an invitation even if you meet the relevant points score. In fact, there could be a possibility that you might need to score significantly above the points score threshold to increase your chance of receiving an invitation.

Astra Australia Immigration can work with you to manage any critical deadlines and map out suitable strategies to help make the most of your points score potential.
