Skilled Independent 189 Visa

The 189 Visa (points-tested) is a permanent residence visa that does not require support by an employer, an eligible family member nor an Australian state or territory government.

The first step is to check whether the nominated occupation is on the list for the 189 visa. Then, submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) into the Skillselect system. If the application has enough points and the EOI indicates the applicant has skills that are currently in demand, there is a good chance that an invitation will be issued to lodge the 189 visa.

Even if all the criteria is met there is no guarantee of securing an invitation but, if successful, applicants will have 60 days to lodge visa application.

189 Visa General Requirements

The general criteria for lodging a 189 visa application includes:

  • Be 18 to 44 years of age

  • Score at least 65 points

  • Demonstrate Competent English

  • Have a positive skill assessment in the nominated occupation

  • Lodge an EOI through the Skillselect system, and be invited to apply

  • Meet health and character requirements

The 189 visa gives the holder Australian permanent residence. This means they can live in Australian permanently with full work rights - it is important to note that the travel facility on this visa is valid for 5 years from the date of grant so, consideration should be given as to whether a Resident Return Visa or Australian Citizenship are the appropriate next steps.
